Sounds of Rain: 2024

A collection of rainy days in France and New York.

Collecting music is one of my favorite practices. It’s something I always notice, sitting with friends around a marble table sipping a nightcap and a track lingering, or waiting in a café in Reykjavík for a coffee and picking up the track playing on vinyl, music always helped me capture a moment. There’s something about traveling and being out there in the world, experiencing an adventure with company or solo, where music for me is a souvenir.

Beyond music, the pure sounds of nature rarely capture my intrigue, except for rain. Especially unexpected rain. The surprising burst of the skies that push us into shelter and maybe a moment of wonderment. Here, I’m sharing a few rain tracks I recorded this year.

  1. Rain from Bedroom Window — May 2024

This recording of rain was taken from my bedroom window. The stormy winds, thunder and lighter sounds of heavy rain drops echo along the road.

  1. Walking on Manhattan Ave — July 2024

Caught in a summer pour, walking along Manhattan Avenue. The patter of puddles, cars gliding by, wind, and rain drops on my umbrella.

The Gallo-Roman museum in Lyon has an interior filled with curves and spiral pathways, an extension to the curved Roman amphitheaters outside of the museum. Parts of the the ceiling of the museum have skylights, where you can see and hear the rain.

  1. May 2024 — Rain, from Kitchen Window

Recorded the same day as the first track here, the rain sounds completely different — my west facing kitchen windows, fire escape and window A/C unit capture the drops in its own melody.

Sound and vibrational tones have expanded my artistic experiences in so many ways. The healing powers of certain sound frequencies and pure sound have varying impacts on your body, perspectives and quality of life. Noticing sounds, music and noise that surround you is a great practice towards awareness and sense of embodiment. As you become more aware of sounds that bring joy or relaxation vs. distress or drain, you get closer to decorating your space and experiences with vibrations attuned to your desired nature of being.
